All About Soundtracks Review:
The most recent work from Howard Shore in the thriller genre once again proves his ability to make an orchestra feel deep and somber.

With a suspicious main theme in harp and strings, that suddenly brings a low brass blast, heard in Main Title, this score sets the pace and mood of the movie perfectly.
In Edge of Darkness, Mel Gibson plays a father in a quest for revenge after his daughter is murdered in front of him for political reasons. Howard Shore was given the task to replace the first composer for the movie and score the series of gory events.
The instrumentation works well, but the thematic development is only made in the last cues of the album. In Emma, Reunited and You’re My Girl, Shore employs a piano theme for father and daughter that is the only light of affection in this dark and restrained score.
However, as said, this score brings mostly darkness. Captured and Killing pretty much sum up the middle portion of the score, with violent blasts of low brass and tense strings emerging sometimes. There’s also a sudden “scream” of insanely high strings to highlight the violence and blood on screen.
At the end, in Edge of Darkness, the main title is fully developed, now with the brass coming just at the end of the cue, barely audible, just as if to announce that the violence is over. That’s when You’re My Girl enters, bringing the soft piano theme, providing an expected highlight.
Overall, a good score with a few surprises and highlights, not many but enough to please any Howard Shore fan.

Ups: violent, somber score, with some soft moments too, that proves the mastery of Howard Shore.

Downs: the first two thirds of the album (especially the second) may turn down some listeneres as it falls all the similar pace and mood.

Noteworthy tracks: Main Titles, Pursuit, Emma, Captured, Killing, Reunited, Edge of Darkness, Your're My Girl.
