All About Soundtracks Review:
The debut chapter on the Twilight Saga was scored by Carter Burwell, who usually collaborates with the Coen brothers.
However, 2008’s Twilight is not a Coen brothers movie, and the music reflects the quality of the movie. Therefore, Carter Burwell can’t be the only one to blame for this very-less-than-average score.

Twilight opens with the “predator” theme (in How Would I Die) – a simplistic progression of chords in synths, backed by drum loops and filled with a two-note descending guitar groaning. The lack of inspiration present in this score becomes evident when this theme is repeated with little variation in I Know What You Are, The Skin of a Killer and Showdown at the Ballet Studio. The chords of the theme are present in the piano solo Stuck Here Like Mom. And, actually, In Place of Someone You Love seems almost totally copy-paste from How Would I Die. If really scoring a movie was like this, it would be pretty easy.
This theme represents the vampire Edward Cullen and the danger associated to him being a vampire, while the love that Bella develops for him is scored with a well-known theme that you probably heard (either in the movie or in the tons of Youtube videos where it is used).
Bella’s Lullaby is the climax of this theme and actually the only good track in the score. And it’s not amazing or great as millions of fans claim. It’s just a simple piano and string piece that is beautiful and all cute. When compared to the rest of the score though, this track might actually seem amazing and great.
This theme is also present in guitar and piano in Phascination Phase and Edward in Her Bed, two calm, moody renditions of the theme. Even before Bella’s Lullaby, the development of the theme is made in the enigmatic and, once again, moody (which might mean dull) The Lion Fell in Love with the Lamb.
Aiming at the fanbase of the saga, Carter Burwell insisted heavily on drums and guitars, creating and industrial-rock ambience for the score: listen to the new-age-y Who Are They (which first half features an interesting female vocal) or the simply terrible tracks like Treaty, Complications and Nomads.
Appropriate for its public, this score fails to create an entertaining listening experience and Bella’s Lullaby is probably the only track one remembers after listening to this album.
(Thank God Burwell didn't return for the second installment on the saga.)

Ups: the sound and pace of the score is appopriate for the movie and its fanbase.

Downs: terrible tracks relying in drum loops and electric guitars, too similar to each other.

Noteworthy tracks: Bella's Lullaby, The Lion Fell in Love with the Lamb.

Score note: 3
