All About Soundtracks Review: After the ethereal yet subtlely agressive orchestral effort in The Da Vinci Code, Zimmer returns, as expected, to score its follow-up, Angels & Demons.

The movie itself was more fast-paced than its predecessor and had not only religion, but also science and technology. Predictably, Zimmer employs here numerous sound effects to relate to the scientific themes in the movie, most of them similar to the ones used in The Dark Knight. However, he does it in a very intelligent and effective way.
The score opens with 160 BPM, a track that immediatly explodes into action music. There's a lot of power there, but also a subtle beauty: the bass ryhtm and the violent sound effects contrast with the choral and orchestral layers of the track, in an outstanding way. Like religion and science. Like angels and demons.
God Particle sounds more like ambient choral music, after its delightful begginning.
The next three tracks go again to the thrill and action. The highlight is Air, that runs for 9 minutes and has it all: sound effects, choir, orchestra, piano. Energy and then melacholy. Zimmer at his best.
The tracks are long though they rarely seem overlong. Actually the best cue is Science and Religion (running for 12 minutes), which puts an end to all of this action music. It's elegant, sad and full of beauty, feauturing violin solos by Joshua Bell.
Some themes are brought from The Da Vinci Code, but the melody from Chevaliers de Sangreal is, as expected, the most heard here. It's employed and several tracks with some variations, the most stong being in the last cue, 503, that sounds like a shorter version of Chevaliers de Sangreal, using church organ and strings.
This score is very entertaning, and as a lot of delightful moments, both in the action cues as in the more peaceful ones. Hans Zimmer work in this one defines all he's done through his career. A recommended score.

Noteworthy tracks: 160 BPM, Air, Science and Religion, Election by Adoration, 503.

Score note: 8,5/10.
